Is this your idea of "Staging?"
Or is this your idea of "Staging?"
Does the first room look blah, cold, uninteresting or define the space? Of course not. Unfortunately, this is some peoples idea or perception of Home Staging. Putting a few pieces here and there, without rhyme or reason, just doesn't make sense. In fact the top photos look like someone just forgot to move everything out.
If you are thinking about staging your home, don't do it this way. Hire a professional Home Stager to stage it right, creating interest, and visual appeal of how a house can look.

I love your post. You should make a commercial saying just that. It is so true. So many times you see spaces that look like that. I believe that even light staging can make a difference, but only if it is done right Good post.
Nice job! Are those little bitty fans on that middle shelf? Cute!
Hard to look at the shelves upon shelves upon shelves. Great job breaking up that pattern!
The first photo is quite interesting: it looks like someone packed up in a hurry and just forgot a few things! The second photo looks like an interesting room where a person could spend some time. (I really like the desk, too!)
Like it a lot Cindy! But I always admire your work, no matter how elaborate or simple. So #2 is my idea of staging.
I had to laugh! photo #! The dog forgot his eating dish and his fans....#2 Nice spacious office!!
Great job Cindy!!
A dog bowl? I love it when I go into Realtors listings that warn me by saying they've staged it but just a little. And it looks like that! Nice job.
Thanks for this humorous tribute to proper staging vs. less than desirable defining of space. Good job Cindy!
Great point Cindy! Staging is so much more than throwing a few accessories in an empty space. Your work is beautiful!
Cindy, I sure show a lot of houses that take their cue from that first picture.
I also most spit my coffee out laughing when I saw the first picture. Some people DO think that the firs pic IS Staging. Great example of the dos & don'ts.
HI Cindy, you made me laugh right out loud and spit my tea out when I scrolled down to the first picture!
I attended an open house recently where there were a couple of throw pillows on the floor . . . the realtor's idea of light staging! In some cases vacant is better -- especially when it's odd like your first photo. Nice work as always!
Great approach to make the point. I too had a laugh when I saw that first picture. I do see a marketing opportunity with this idea...great work!
They took minimalism to a new low. Love the dog bowl.
Chrissie-Thanks so much, maybe I should put it on my website.
Patsy-Yes, they are original little fans, aren't they cuted!
Gina-Thanks, for staging, it works pretty well.
Peg-Thanks, the desk is actually solid wood and made really well, I was actually suprised.
Dale-Your so sweet, thanks1
Cathy-I have to tell everyone, it's not a dog bowl, but the clock on the wall.
Cindy-Oh, I've seen alot worse..lol
Aron-Thanks, for you're comment!
Annie-I'll say, "throwing" a few accessories around just doesn't work.
Marchel-Sellers don't realize the difference staging can really make.
Connie- I saw one where they had brought in stuff from a flea market...it was so bad!
Michelle-Just trying to make a point...HA!
Margaret-I know, I've seen that too. How does that help anyone visualize furniture?
Tara-Marketing opportunity? Hmmm....sounds interesting!
Carol-It does look like a dog bowl, it's the clock on the wall.
This is a good point! I was actually contacted by a homeowner trying to sell their home and asked if I could come in to do a staging consultation. I looked around and it was in dire need of some staging. Furniture out of place and accessories in places that didn't make any sense. They told me that their realtor had actually staged their home and told them that this is all that needed to be done. Needless to say, the house had been on the market for months, but once I came in and tweeked pieces here and there and brought in some better accessories to bring those all important emotional connections, they sold their home within two weeks. Just because people say they "staged" a house doesn't mean they "staged" the house. Its always better to hire a professional home stager that has experience and training in the field. Thanks for the post.

John-I couldn't agree with you more. It seems some perception of staging is greatly different than what it really is.
Ahhhhh!!! The old "doodad" and "knick-knack" school of staging! LOL
Honestly, I'd rather see it empty than to see these half-hearted attempts. You did a lovely job. Personally, open shelving like this is the bane of my existence. I totally hate it. I've made a real treasure-hunt out of finding accessories in interesting shapes to break up the row upon row of shelves. But that's what us stagers are for, right?
