Eco-Friendly Kitchen & Bathroom Counters

For the consumer that wants to go green, new eco friendly choices in kitchen counters are available.

Recycled Glass- It's on the pricey side, and is made from colored recycled glass mixed into a cement, concrete , or resin base. The glass that is used is from the waste stream and the cement is made with fly ash, which is a by product from burning coal that would end up in landfills.

End-Grain Bamboo- This is made of end grain bamboo and glued into panels.  It's a renewable fast growing plant.   Midrange cost.

Counter001

Recycled Paper- Made from recycled paper in a resin base, available in 1/4" to 2" thickness, with many hues to choose from.  It uses paper that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, and uses petroleum, formaldehyde-free resins, some are made from cashew nut shell liquid.  Low to midrange cost.

Locust Vanity Counter

Sustainable wood- Butcher-block counters are of lumber from lesser known tree species that have been sustainably harvested. Uses reclaimed wood and is of medium to high cost compared to the traditional butcher block.

Recycled Aluminum- This is a solid-surface material containing post industrial scrap aluminum in polymeric resin.  It is made from 50-90% recycled aluminum, which makes it's cost comparable to upper-end granite.

There are so many new green products hitting the market right now. As a builder the bad part is that they aren't fully tested by time. Great info.

Cindy, I saw the paper at the Interior Design Show in Toronto, it is really cool. I'm considering it for my own kitchen. The aluminum looks awesome too! Thanks for the info

We have a listing with the end grain bamboo for a portion of the kitchen counter space. It looks really cool and it looks a lot different from the effect you get with bamboo flooring.

Bob & Carolin-Me too, I haven't seen any in person yet.

Chip-Good point...something to think about!

Renee-It does look really interesting and fun.

Kimberley-The paper does look neat, I wonder about keeping it clean?

Barbara-It does, maybe it will hit your area soon.

Pete-Bamboo seems to be really popluar and used in alot of ways.

Sabrina-I think that would look sharp in a loft kitchen.

Pam-Time will tell, and probably what HGTV likes, the mass will follow.

Cindy - I have been drooling over those recycled glass countertops since I first saw them in Ed Begley's show.  If only they made them locally...

Aloha Cindy

My neighbor just last night was talking about using sea glass and polymer resin to redo her floors. Now I can show her this product. The aluminum/polymeric resin looks amazing. Thanks for the post.

Peace,

Great post!  I love the new options especially the glass, and aluminum.  I never would have even thought to try and make a counter top out of resysled paper...unbelievable!

I just sold a home that had Marmoleum kitchen counters. Marmoleum is a form of Linoleum and it looked great.
