Agreed!! A lot of people see before/after photos labeled "staged" and when you look closely, you see new paint, replaced flooring, new plumbing fixtures, etc. This is REMODELING!!!
Although I am just getting started into Staging and have more hands-on experience as a redesigner/remodeler, I find that Sellers looking to do a redesign also need staging after the project is finished. However, these are tow different bids/consultations and should be treated as such.
Hi Cindy! Happy New Year!! As a professional designer, remodeler and home stager, my business covers it all. I understand what you are pointing out....and staging is different than remodeling. However, a simple paint job is a type of remodel and many stagers guide their clients to remove out-dated wall-paper and repaint. Flooring is part of staging...and remodeling if it needs to be updated. In reality, the two go hand in hand with real estate. Many home stagers are not trained with the abilities to direct a remodel so there is often a fine line I feel. Clients want to sell their home and often times, partial remodels are in order. Experience with understanding Interior Design and creativity is KEY to the success with clients in this type of arena.
Everyone is excited about the concept of Home Staging. It is our job to educate the public and to provide the best solutions for our clients....whatever that may entail. I will never hold back my thoughts on potential improvements if I think it will make a difference in the offers my client will receive. The final decision is always up to the client and if a Home Stager is uncomfortable with offering this type of detailed consultation, I would hope that they would defer to another more experienced professional. The flip side is also important....home remodeling companies often have little clue as to HOW to stage a home.
As you already know, Home Staging entails more than just positioning furniture and towels. The clients expect a lot from us these days because of the HGTV shows. It is up to the Home Stager to decide if they can handle a job or not. Keeping the quality of work at a higher level of standard is important for us as we move forward. No doubt there will always be tag-a-longs who want a piece of the pie.
I say "Do your best work and don't worry about the others"...I for one am thrilled that so many people are opening up to the idea of Home Staging to begin with!! Aren't you?? : ) We provide the finishing touches in the end...and we also provide the education for the public to understand the need for Home Staging.....which will often include remodel work. I hear what you are saying...and understand it. It is hard for everyone to 'wanna' catch up to the popular people....the HOME STAGERS!! Nice post Cindy!
