When you have a wood burning fireplace, always remove ashes that have accumulated (when their cool of course) during the winter. During the winter try to keep the ashes out as best as possible. Place logs on the grate if it's a working fireplace, if not you can place pillar candles in a fireplace for a nice effect. The fireplace is a great selling point in the winter, and should be turned on or lit during an open house. Don't be tempted to leave a fireplace unattended, even if you just have candles in it. Clean the soot off the glass screen and use "scrubbing bubbles" or "tsp" (Trisodium phosphate) on the surface of the bricks around the fireplace. Spray on wait a while, you will see the soot disappearing, and then scrub with a cleaning brush.
