Houston's Messiest Apartment

I came across this article and couldn't believe someone could actually live here.  It's pretty easy to see that they liked fast food, smoked, and had cats.  And if you look at the links of the photos below you will see they actually had some cleaning supplies sitting around and an ironing board!  I can't even imagine the rodents, roaches and ants in this place.  Seriously, if you are the queasy type don't look at the second set of photos, especially the bathroom!  I can't believe what I'm seeing here!  These are shocking and very sad at the same time.  Where are those TV Cleaning Ladies from "How Clean Is Your House? when you need them?

Everything else aside, this is a very sad situation for whomever lived there.

This would not be a fun place to stage.  If no care is taken in the living areas, you can imagine that little or maintenance is being done on the house.

Cindy ~ I'm glad we don't have to deal with homes like this pigpen -- yuk!  I didn't have the heart to open the other link, these were bad enough LOL

These are terrible and the people inside must simply be sick.

Posted by Benjamin Realty LLC over 2 years ago

It's so sad. Clearly this person is much more than just a pig. There are messages all over the place -  This person is afraid to throw anything away that they have purchased, touched, or used, as if by throwing away those items, they themselves would cease to exist.

I looked at the other pictures.  I used to know someone who was like this woman. She was an outcast, and I was her only friend. I saw her every day, and we chatted. When she got sick, I took her to the hospital. When she died, she left me her house in her will. When I went to take possession and clean it out, she had similar piles. What was obviously trash, to her, was evidence of her life, of having had a life. Not much of a life to some, but she had her proof. Maybe no one wanted to be a part of it, but she did have a life.

A hoarder places value and feelings onto things in their world instead of themselves. Whomever made this probably mess felt so alone, unacknowledged,  lonely and scared, all they had to validate their existence is pizza boxes, soda cups, and cigarettes. These were her comfort, her companions. I'll bet she was actually very clean in outward appearance. The walls are white. She didn't have dirty hands. The white cupboards and drawer pulls aren't dingy.  Her bed has a pretty headboard. Her blue-ticking sofa and chair were once crisp and clean. This house was her secret shame. She wasn't always like this. She's sick.

Cindy - It really does make you wonder how people can even live like that.  Amazing!

Cindy, holy f****** crap!  That is just unbelievable.   That is someone severly disturbed.

Posted by Kevin Cavanaugh Associate Broker, ABR, GREEN (Keller Williams Hudson Valley Realty) over 2 years ago

Charles-It was an apartment, but either way they shouldn't have let it get to this point.

Maureen-A little queasy are you?  They are even more unbelievable.

Leilani-I don't blame you!

Bob & Carol-Well, this environment would make you sick if you were well to begin with.

Michelle-I agree, this person probably has several issues.  It's really very sad because the photos do tell a story, a very sad one.  The mess was her comfort.  Funny, I guess the stager in us picked up on the really nice headboard among all of the mess.

Jason-Scary isn't it?  We never know how people live, and yes, it is Amazing!

Kevin-Unfortuneately, they probably had issues, if not, they were major hoarders.

Sad that someone is living like that.  Hate to think about what is at the bottom of all those piles.

I've had two calls this week from Realtors with "hoarder" situations.  Interesting.  It is very sad and these people have issues that require professional help.  You can't just tell them to "clean it up" or "throw that stuff out" because they are not capable of handling it.  I agree it is very sad.

Hi Cindy ~ As others have mentioned my first reaction was "how sad".  Hoarding is a syndrome and most hoarders' homes are very similar.  I stumbled upon an A & E show "Hoarders" over the holiday weekend and watched several episodes. It's very difficult to deal with - it's not a matter of just cleaning up - not by a long shot.  As somebody who likes stuff - a lot - I watch the episodes as a cautionary tale of sorts - it does put our /my attachment to stuff in a new light when I can watch another's struggle with detachment.

It's too bad that their secrets are being spread all over - I guess it was a very popular post on the original website.  I think that often hoarders' situations spiral out of control as appliances and fixtures break down and they are too ashamed to let anyone in.

Looks like my old frat house from college.  Who did the staging. . . Burger King?

Posted by Tom Boos (Sine & Monaghan Realtors, Real Living) over 2 years ago

Michele-Not much telling what would be uncovered.

Sharon-I've known hoarders, and they do keep cups and containers from fast food places, it's hard to understand.

Liz-If it was stuff (clutter), I could understand, but to go containers, I don't get.  I'm sure they were overwhelmed.  Luckily, their names or identities were never mentioned, and I'm not sure that they even still lived there at that point.

Tom-I think there were several chains to blame here.

Hoarding is an illness and requires professional help.  It is very difficult for these people to throw anything away.  Even if someone were to come in and clean-up the place, it would just be a matter of time before it looked the same again.  There are deep psychological problems that need to be addressed first.

It's amazing to me though how these people don't get sick more often than they do, I mean look at the filth, especially in the bathroom!  Most of them just move from place to place so that they don't get found out or live very secluded lives so that their secrets aren't revealed.  It is very sad indeed.

Posted by Emma Vargas, Simply Staging (Simply Staging) over 2 years ago

Emma-I actually had a similar case. It was an estate situation, the lady had been a pack rat all of her life, and every time she moved the kids tried to clean things up, and it would just get messed up again.  I did go to her house and spent about a week getting things as organized as I could.  It didn't even look like the same place.  When she passed, I was called back in to get it ready to sale, and it was even worse than it was the first time I had straightened it.  This time it took me about 12 hours a day for over a week, yes it was that bad.  The difference was, she didn't live in the filth, but she did have the clutter and general mess.
