Cindy,  I actually know a lady who's brother-in-law works in cndrete and have been invited out to his workshop to do some work in concrete.  Concrete is definately a nice option for a kithen countertop.

You are right about the sleek modern look.  I have seen a lot of these lately and just love the smooth, sleek feel.  It looks like more of a project then I would want to tackle but the results are great.
