I'm really loving the art of tablescapes, they are amazing, and quite an art form.  They can range from the simplistic to extravagant.  You can have ecclectic to extremely formal.  Placement of people is extremely important when using place cards.  Using place cards is an effective way to have guest sit next to people they don't know.  A party is always more fun when you meet new, interesting people.  Seat people that you think will keep the conversation going sprinkled around the table. 

The table should be in layers.  The first layer are the items that stay on the table such as the tablecloth, centerpiece, chargers, and placemats.  The Second layer are the items you use.  The glasses, flatware, napkins and plates.  The final layer are the details.  The place cards, any small tokens or gifts.   This will make the meal a memorable one.

An interesting, creative table will be remembered, and talked about.  It can be the focal point of the party and something guest can make small talk about to each other.

There are so many creative themes, ideas and even crafts that you can make that will impress guests with your tablescape abilities.

With the Holiday Season upon us, we will all probably be guests of someone or will have guests staying with us.  If relatives or friends are planning on visiting you anytime of the year, make them feel welcome by doing a few special things that will make them more comfortable while being away from their homes.

It will not only make them feel special, but let them know that you were thinking about them, and want them to have an enjoyable stay.

I've stayed thousands of nights away from home and boy does it make a difference when your hotel or host provides special touches.  So think boutique hotels which lend a more personal touch to their guests when getting your space ready.

Sometimes guests just want to retire to the bedroom just to relax or be alone for a while.  It makes it much more enjoyable if there is more than just a bed in the room.  Pamper your house guests with some of these suggestions.

Here are a few tips and ideas to use year round:

Lets start in the bedroom.

• A place for them to set their luggage for unpacking and then a place to store luggage.
• A small bowl of potpourri, or scented diffuser (not too overpowering, and be aware of people that are sensitive of scents).
• A place for their belongings.  Make sure drawers and closets are cleared out with plenty of hangers, even the ones with clips on them.
• Fresh new linens, not your leftover mismatched ones.  (I love fluffy comforters with duvet covers).
• New comfortable pillows.  (This is my biggest pet peeve.   I've had to sleep on some of the worst pillows in some of the finest hotels.  Hotels seem to skimp on the pillows unless they are feather, and I'm allergic to them, and I don't like the way they flatten down, so I carry my own.  It can really make or break your stay, and your guest may not feel comfortable telling you your pillows are like bricks or flat as pancakes).
• A comfortable mattress. (Another pet peeve.  Again, hotels skimp on this main event in the guestroom.   I can not tell you, how many horrible mattresses I've had to sleep on, and I'm not talking low budget hotels, I'm talking 4 & 5 star luxury hotels.  If you don't have have a reasonably good mattress, buy a memory foam topper- I like the 4" thick one.  They are very reasonably priced, and make a world of difference)  Brad Pitt (Yes, the actor) says the perfect combination for a bed is a pillow top mattress with a tempur-pedic topper.  And Brad can afford the best, this is what I had, before Brad came up with this combo and it it heaven!
• Extra pillows and blankets in the closet.
• Robes hanging in the closet.
• If it's summer and you don't have a ceiling fan, provide a small tabletop fan, especially if you don't have air conditioning.
• Bottled water and glasses for their first night.
• Fresh flowers on the dresser or nightstand.
• A lamp to read by.
• A few interesting books and magazines and a deck of cards.
• A dish with some candy or mints.
• A nightlight so they don't stumble around in the dark.
• A box of tissues.
• A small notepad with pen.
• A comfy throw to use if wanting to take a nap, or just to cover up without getting into the bed.
• A basket or plastic bag with pull ties in the closet to put dirty clothing items in.
• A TV and radio if possible.
• A clock with an alarm.
• A telephone.
• Internet access if possible.
• And if you have the room, an iron and ironing board in the closet comes in handy for those wrinkled clothes.
• Eye Patches & Ear Plugs. (this may be over the top for some, but if your room is extremely sunny, or noisy from road noise and they are used to a dark quite room, they will be extremely grateful). 
• And for the ultimate, provide a small coffee pot and cups with condiments. 
• And if you really want to add something extra special, especially if it's a couple, provide a bottle of wine, glasses and opener.

In The Bathroom:

• An amenities basket with shampoo, lotion, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, Q-tips, cotton balls or pads, razors  and small items they may have forgotten.
• Basic medicine like aspirin, Tylenol, Rolaids and some band aids.
• Fresh plush bath towels, face towels, washcloths and spa type bath rug for shower and tub.
• If multiple people are using the same bathroom, provide a basket of nicer dinner napkins as an option as not to spread germs.
• Hair Dryer.
• Also, if multiple people are using one bathroom, provide disinfectant wipes and spray, as not to spread germs and wipe down counters and toilets after use, or before use.
• Fresh soap (still in wrapper).  Pump soap next to sink.
  If they enjoy baths, impress with an assortment of bath salts, fizzes, oils and bubbles.
• Small disposable or real glasses for brushing teeth.
• Extra rolls of toilet paper (Extra soft 2-ply).
• Air Freshener spray.
• A Box of tissues.
• Eye make-up remover cloths or a set of washcloths guests can use.
• Night light.
• Magnifying Make-up mirror.
• Toilet plunger. (Hopefully the one item a guest will not need to use!)

I don't recommend candles.  They are great, but I've known people that have gone off and left them burning when going to sleep or leaving the house.  Way to risky!

This builders model was for a complex of townhomes in a trendy area of Houston.  It was done on a minimal budget.  Home Staging doesn't have to be expensive, and in this case I was able to show the buyer the layout of furniture for them, so they wouldn't have to wonder.  There are other photos, but they turned out too dark.  I will take more when I de-stage.

This investment property was staged with "lite" furniture and accessories.  The tree and screen were put in front of the windows until some shades are put up.  The view next door was not a selling feature.  This cape cod style house was completely redone in an up and coming neighborhood.  While I was staging it some neighbors came by that were having a party across the street.  They oohed and awed, and couldn't believe the transformation.  They had seen me bringing items in and couldn't resist the urge to come over and have a look.

The parade begins at 9:00am, downtown Houston, on Thurdsay, November 27, 2008.  The parade begins on the east side of downtown, traveling 20 blocks starting at Minute Maid Park at Hamilton and Texas.

This has become an unsaid tradition for Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners.  Aunt Cindy's Peppermint Pies, Garlic Mashed potatoes, dressing and my ever changing salads, including caprese salad.

This pie is one of the best and easiest I've ever seen, I promise this will not disappoint.

Recipe for 1 pie:

• 1 envelope plain gelatin
• 1/4 c. cold water
• 1/2 c. heavy cream, plus 1-1/2 cups heavy cream, whipped
• 8 ounces ( I use a little more) soft mint candy (the best is Bob's Sweet Stripes, it looks like a puffy ball and is individually wrapped in a plastic container with lid)
• 1 prepared Oreo pie crust (my oldest nephew likes a regular graham crust or you can use chocolate)
• Crushed peppermint candies, for top (take out of individual wraps, put in plastic bag, and take outside on concrete and pound with a rubber mallet or meat tenderizer)

Soften the gelatin in water and set to the side.  Add 1/2 cup of the heavy cream in a small saucepan with the candies and cook over low heat until candy melts.  Add gelatin mixture and mix well.  My family likes it with some gelatin chunks, not completely liquefied.  Let cool and fold in whipped cream.  Pour into crust, sprinkle with the crushed peppermint candies, put plastic lid back on top and chill thoroughly.

Make two of these, they go fast!

The Texas Home & Garden Show was a few weeks ago and I decided to go check it out.  There was one exhibitor that had the neatest steam iron I've ever seen.  It did everything.  You could even leave it lying down, and the heat didn't transfer, it stayed cool, and seemed to be effortless.  I passed on getting one, because the show was about to close, and I thought I'd pick up one the next day.  Long story short, I didn't make it back to the show, but now that I'd seen how handy they were I was bound and determined to get one.  I looked them up on their website, and they were $100 more than if I'd bought one on the spot.  So being the stubborn one, I didn't get one. 

I was out shopping and saw a Rownenta Power Press, looked similar, but wasn't as advanced, and didn't cost as much as the $300 one at the show.

I decided to give it a try, and was not that impressed, so decided to empty the water out of the iron.  As I as doing this I crossed over above my other arm with the iron, and somehow, the iron stuck to my arm with steam spewing out.  It happened so fast.  It litteraly branded me through many layers of skin.  It wasn't like a sunburn, this one felt deep and painful.  My brother-in-law, happened to call, and said to put ice on it, as I was already headed for the aloe vera.  He is an actor, and said that a woman on the set had just been burned by one of those steamers on a stand.  They had used ice on her, and it was said to be the best thing.

At this point, the $300 would have been money well spent.

So short and long of it, yes I'm admittedly a klutz, but, beware of steamers, they are much more powerful than an iron.  And before you pour the water out, make sure it's cooled down first.
