"Black Friday" Did You Come Away Empty Handed?

Another tradition that has been started in our family with the nieces and nephews is "Black Friday". My family lives in Tulsa, which happened to get a cold blast this year. I left 80 degree temps. in Houston to arrive in 30 degree temps. with a forecast of the low 20's for "Black Friday". "Yeah!"

This is how it goes, for those of you that haven't experienced it. You go stand in line and battle the cold for hours in hopes you get all those great electronic gadgets you don't really need. This year with the temps dropping in the low 20's we opted for going later around 3:30am, luckily the stores started opening at 5am instead of 8 am. The lines were wrapped around the stores perimeters. My nephew being 19 and fully determined to be "one of 9 people to get a 50" Plasma" went around midnight and waited it out. This is not exactly what I call fun, nor did I need anything, but the kids thought it was "awesome" to go shopping at dark in freezing temps, before the sun came up, scraping ice off the windshield, going to the mall to fight the crowds, eating breakfast out, and then stopping at "Krispy Kreme" and having Godiva Coffee at Dillard's. They had it all mapped out and knew exactly what they wanted and were on a mission, I was actually really impressed, they had done the research.

They had a ball, all ended up happy, getting what they wanted, and yes my nephew got his 50" Plasma, a complete computer system, wireless keyboard, DVD High Def. Up-Conversion for his plasma, and who knows what else. My youngest nephew stocked up on XBOX games, and the girls went for IPOD NANO's and clothes. So we are all loaded up on more electronics, computers, dvd's and things that I'm sure I can't operate...until next years sale!

Would I do it all over again...of course!

"Enchanted" A Movie For All Ages!

Amy Adams , Patrick Dempsey , Rachel Covey and James Marsden in Walt Disney Pictures' Enchanted

Being with family at Thanksgiving is always a lot of fun! Especially with the nieces and nephews. We always do special things, to spend time with each other, and have memories and stories that will continue on for the next generation. This year my niece wanted to see the Disney movie "Enchanted" so we rounded em' all up and took them to see this cartoon turned real day romance story. It was a cross between, Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and a little bit of The Little Mermaid, cleverly intertwined into a modern day romance story in Manhattan, with the twist of a fairy tale Princess and her Prince from a make believe land.

It was cute and everyone liked it, but my niece didn't realize it had as much music as it did. But who doesn't love a movie that a girl meets her true love and they live in happiness forever and ever! It was rated PG, I suppose because of a dragon scene, that could have been a little scary for smaller children.

2007 Clear Lake Annual Christmas Lane Boat Parade-Clear Lake, TX

On Parade Nine One One

I have lived here almost 13 years and live less than a mile away, and have never made this event! I always seem to be traveling and have always missed it. I think I'm overdue to go, and will try and make it out this year, as I hear it's a sight to see. I went to the Galveston Boat Parade last year, and it was a lot of fun, but wasn't near the size of this one. It's a great way to start off the Christmas season with some Holiday cheer and who can't use that!

It's one of the most visited events in the area with over 100,000 people expected this year. I've been told it can be best viewed from the Kemah shoreline, and will be held on Dec. 9th. The parade will start around 7:00p.m. Boats will be adorned with extravagant lights, decorations, music, and Santa with his elves.

Blue Santa Program-League City, TX

The League City Blue Santa Program is in full swing in preparation for Christmas. This program gives children toys and bikes in the local area that would not be fortunate to receive gifts. The League City Police Department heads up the program with help of volunteers from the Vehicle Maintenance Department, Police Department, E.M.S., the League City Volunteer Fire Department and the community of League City. The Blue Santa program also offers families gift certificates to buy food from a local grocery store. 155 families were provided gifts and over 460 children were given toys in their 2007 program.

To register or donate gifts contact the League City Police Department, 500 W. Walker, League City until December 7th. Donation items needed include gifts for children's from ages 0 to 2 and 10 to 14. Cash donations are also accepted.

Three Christmas spirits visit Scrooge in Pasadena Little Theater's holiday production of A Christmas Carol, adapted from the Charles Dickens classic by Mary K. Isaacs. "Fil-A-Sac" sponsored by NAMI Gulf Coast has grown to successfully fill a little over 600 sacks for consumers (persons with mental illness). Each year, NAMI GC continues to meet the holiday needs of the mentally ill population and anticipates filling 700 sacks for the 2007 year.

With the holidays approaching NAMI GC is thinking of the consumers and their feelings such as loneliness and depression during this season. In November, NAMI GC gathers volunteers, families and sponsors from in and around Galveston, Brazoria Country and the Greater Bay Area who area inspired by consumer needs and the approaching holidays. These supporters collectively seek out hygiene items, nonperishable food, small jewelry, socks, make-up, wallets, playing cards, etc. Consumers decorate bags and everyone gathers for the festive event of filling the bags with much needed items. Thanksgiving- Share Your Favorite Dessert Recipe!

A few more day's and we'll be busy in the kitchen preparing our traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Last year I came across this recipe. It was the first dessert to disappear. I had my doubts when making it, but it was absolutely delicious and pretty!

"Peppermint Pie"

1 envelope plain gelatin

1/4 cup cold water

1/2 cup heavy cream, plus 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, whipped

8 ounces peppermint candies, soft type

1 prepared chocolate cookie crust

Crushed peppermint candies, for garnish

Soften gelatin in water and set aside. Put 1/2 cup heavy cream in a small saucepan with candies and cook over low heat until candy melts. Add gelatin mixture and mix well. Let cool and fold in whipped cream. Pour into crust, sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies, and chill thoroughly.
