Staging FAQ's-Can we leave our hurricane shutters up while we're out of town?

Great tips if you live in Houston's Bay Area and Galveston's Gulf Coast.

I'm sharing Kathy Streib, owner and home stager of Room Service Home Staging in Palm Beach County blog on FAQ's for selling a property on the Coast.

Living on the coast we always have to take precautions for hurricane season.  Kathy has devised a list for homeowners that have a house for sale on the coast and what to do during this season.

If you keep the shutters on the house it will be very dark inside, even with lights on,  and it may not show the view you may have.

Staging FAQ’s  - Can we leave our hurricane shutters up while we’re out of town?

 

When I’m providing a Home Staging Consultation around hurricane Home Staging FAW'sseason, this is a question that I get asked all of the time.  Hurricane season began June 1 and ends November 30, and yes, we’ve had hurricanes in the latter months. (Want hurricane tips?)

If you plan on being gone for any part of the season, it’s smart to think ahead.   However, your house will continue to be shown and you’ll want to take advantage of every viewing.  

Make sure your Buyers will still be able to see your property!

Here are 4 tips to help you while your house is on the market during hurricane season.

 

1.  Leave the hurricane shutters off and make arrangements with a company or service that will install them in the event a hurricane approaches.

You want your buyers to see the space and not feel as if they’re in a cave.
 
 

hurricane tips2.  DO NOT bring in all of your patio furniture and store it in your family room.

 

I’ve seen this done and all it did was eat up all of the space in the family room.  Hire a service or find a friend or relative who will bring your pieces in before a hurricane.

 

3.  If you haven’t already, make sure that your trees and bushes have been trimmed.

The time to trim is not when the hurricane is on the way.   Your limbs and shrubs will just become missiles since community resources will be focused elsewhere.  Besides, a freshly trimmed yard always looks better!

4. DO- go ahead and edit all of your miscellaneous pots, hanging items and yard art before you leave.

These items can become flying missiles in high winds, so now wouldn’t be a bad time to pack up what you will be taking with you to your new home.

 

If you’re putting your house on the market during hurricane season, don’t keep your buyers from seeing your property!
